Nothing to

Write?

 (Writing Exercise)

Is there nothing to write?

Can I really sit here, still, and observe everything and everyone around me and have no ideas for which I can hand craft into a literary sculpture?

Is there nothing to write?

As I watch the birds fly by, playing aerial games through the park, is my mind so void of creativity, so empty that I cannot find something for which to wordsmith?

Is there nothing to write?

Has the Muse stopped whispering invisible images of tangible pictures, for with which I could make come alive on my pad of paper?

Though the clouds blow across the atmosphere and the wind lifts the dust into flight creating a fiery red, pink, and purple sky. Though the horizon is aflame like fire and the smells of cypress and dandelions season the invisible wind currents that rustle the leaves and move the trees in a whistling dance; is it possible that I still have nothing to write?

The planet is spinning, life is happening, experience and wisdom is training every man. Babies suckle; men work, mothers love, and lovers make passion come alive to sing intimate melodies…

And yet I have nothing to write.

Why did I write this? Well, it is because I am a writer, and being a writer one thing has to be consistent: I must write.

I write to become a better writer. On the day I wrote this silly little piece I had been sitting in cafe for about 20 minutes, staring at a blank page, with no clue as to what I could do to fill it. Instead of giving up and putting it off till later I decided that the best thing to do is put the pen on the pad and force it to move. I had nothing...so I wrote about it.

Later I decided to post it on a writing neighborhood site that I like to hang out at, you know, get some feed back. Later that day I had a few e-mails. Most of them were nice, but there were a few that didn't like my post..

"...you were right, you said you had nothing to write and you should have kept it like that. I read your piece and I want you to know that you totally wasted my time..."

Did this make me mad? Nope. I got a kick out of it. I appreciate everyone who want to share their opinion with me. I didn't write it thinking I would win an award. I wrote it because I am a writer and it is what I do.

I encourage you, even when you have nothing in your head, put your pen to the pad, or fingers to the keys, and do what you do, write. Each exercise works our writing muscles and makes us stronger.

This is really the theme of my whole web site. Sometimes it is the easiest thing in the world to write, but, other times, it can be nearly impossible. That is why it is so important for a writer to strive to be consistent. Write every day. Even when you have nothing to write.

Obviously I sell most of my writings, so I don't give the best stuff online, however, I am not opposed to handing out a few morsels and other tasty treats, so feel free to sample some of my stuff that has been published in either literary magazines, online, or in writing contests.
