Is constantly changing. There are as many different forms of poetry out there today as there are ways to express feeling. Just as some people love classical music, some rap, some country, pop, rock, death metal, etc. there are just as many (and more) people all over the world that are able to express themselves through many different forms of poetry.

I am a huge fan of poetry and I consider myself a student of the art. When I started writing poetry when I was all of 6 years old, it started as 'Roses are Red, Violets are Blue...'. I love rhyming verse, and I still write it, but at the same time I realize that the world is vast with different styles. Each style of poetry is beautiful and helps me to taste the world in a different way. I want to learn it all.

On this page, I want to share some of my poetry (some samples of different styles) and also share a little about the different kinds of poetry.

Some samples of my poetry

Most of my poetry comes from four places; my mind, my heart, my emotion, and my work. This is really the same with any writer or artist, but I thought I would make it easier for you to read what you like and skip what you don't so I put them in four categories: About Writing, Love, Faith, and Personal Feelings.

So Much Diversity

Why do I write and share such an assortment of kinds of writing? A young journalist asked me this question about a year ago after checking out a collection of my poetry and short fiction. It's a great question too. Why don't I just focus on one type of writing, one genre.

It is who I am

To be a great writer; to be a truthful writer, I believe that we must be true to ourselves. What makes me passionate? If I know this question, then I know what kind of writer I'm going to be. So what is the answer? Here is my short list:

  1. My faith: I am a Christian and I am super passionate about my relationship with Jesus. No writer, or any other artist, should ever be ashamed of their personal beliefs and faith. It is the convictions and passions for that which we so deeply believe that makes the world so beautiful. No matter what you believe, or stand for, never hide it; it is who you are, it defines you, it makes your art...real art.
  2. My wife and kids: I am one of those silly guys that are 100% head-over-heels, in love with my family. I adore my wife and I have to write about it. And a lot of the science fiction that I write comes from the world my son lives in: the world of youth, innocence, and nonsensical imagination that transports one to a vast array of planets and worlds, filled with creatures, and beings, and structures, that dreams are made from. I try to spend a lot of time there.
  3. Music: I have always loved music. I love to play guitar, sing, and listen to all kinds of music. I think that music shares a very close connection to all the other arts.
  4. Literature: There is nothing better than a great book. I love to read as mush I as I love to right. I love to read poetry, mysteries, how to's, horror, sci-fi, history, essays, shorts, the Bible. I love it all: fiction, nonfiction- it doesn't matter.
  5. Humanity : Life and people. Oh, to travel the world and see, and experience all the cultures of the world. One of my favorite pastimes is to surf the internet and read about interesting cultures and then get on Google earth and view down on these areas and cultures. It's almost like being there.
  6. Coffee: How can I be passionate about coffee? Easy, it's awesome. I love it. I drink it every day, I like to write in coffee shops, smell the aroma of a good South American or African bean. I am such a coffee nerd that I have my Coffee Master's from Starbucks and Coffee Expert Certificate from Seattle's Best coffee.

 

There are many other things that connect and network together to create the interesting person that is me. I must be true to those things and allow them all to help me express who I am through what I write. I would hope that this is the same with all artists.
