Short stories are by far my favorite to write and read. When I was in junior high, a friend let me borrow Ray Bradbury's 'The Illustrated Man'. I had a hard time putting it down, you could see me walking to school reading it, coming home from football practice reading it. You could catch me under my blanket at night reading it; I was addicted to Ray's literary masterpiece.

The stories in that small collection of short stories, changed my personal opinion about the arts and reading. The stories in that book came alive as I read them. The first story, The Veldt, open my eyes to the possibilities of the amazing technology we could some day experience in the future, and the warning to parents about letting their children be raised by technology and not family. The City, in some unknown, undiscovered planet that feeds on those who land their rockets on it hoping to explore, painted my dreams with new living pictures and visions of the unknown. Story after story, I was drunk in Ray's literary vineyard.

Some tasty morsels of my fiction

So I can't just talk about how much I love writing short stories, and neglect to share some of my own, so, below I have put a few links to some of my fiction. Since I am a writer and would like to make a living doing it, I can't just give everything away. These stories are stories that can be found online; most of them are challenge writings, or from short fiction contests. Please read, enjoy, and feel free to drop me an e-mail letting me know what you thought.

.....Continued

I had to get my hands on more, so I bought The Martian Chronicles, One More for the Road, Dandelion Wine, I Sing Body Electric, Long after Midnight. I read them all and it made me even more hungry, so, I tracked all Ray Bradbury's books down and ate up every single one. Soon I was introduced to C.S. Lewis, Edgar Allen Poe, Joan Wester Anderson, Richard Matheson, Steven King, and Pamela Ditchoff.

I quickly found that I loved short fiction. I like a good novel, don't get me wrong, but for me, there was something about being able to start and finish a story while drinking a cup of coffee during a lunch break. It is nice to be able to pick up a book just before I go to sleep, open it, read a whole story -experience a whole story in 3 to 6 pages, and still have time to sleep before I had to go clock in to my morning job in the early hours.

The more I read, the more I discovered about myself. I was soon writing short stories in my mind, while at school and work. One day I wrote down a few of these stories. While I was working at a coffee shop a few years ago I had left one of my short stories on a table, and a co-worker found it and read it. By the end of the day, my story had been passed around the coffee shop and several people told me how awesome it was and wanted to see more. That was one of the most amazing feelings.

I discovered that I had the ability to create situations, creatures, planets, characters, and storylines that others enjoyed visiting. My mind was open for tourists, and my pen was their transportation out of their everyday stressful lives and in to my literary worlds of fictitious creative realities.

How strangely amazing it was to discover that I had the power to connect to another person and give them a momentary mental vacation to a place that provided an imaginary relief, which translated and transferred into their present reality, minus the stress- even though it was only for a moment.

It made a lot of since though. I had found those same momentary vacations when;

  1. C.S. Lewis took my to Narnia, or the Silent Planet

  2. Ray Bradbury took my to Mars

  3. Richard Matheson scared me at 20,000 feet

  4. Pamela Ditchoff gave me a tour of a fascinating neighborhood

  5. Joan Anderson took me to see angels

Now I see that there is true art and beauty in short stories, that stretches much further than our mere love to write them. We the writers- the Artists, have a gift to connect and touch the lives of men; giving them something to look forward to in these amazing times of struggle and need.

So I encourage you, Writer, to write, as one on fire, as one on a mission, as one desperately and feverishly stricken by the Muse. You have a gift, and gifts are made to give to others. Don't be selfish, don't keep your literary masterpiece to yourself; the world is dying to see something beautiful, experience something extraordinary, feel, taste, touch, and smell something more than day to day existence.

You are the Writer; you have the key in your hand, the destination in your mind, let loose and let the world tour the vast expanses of the awe and wonder of your creative literary madness.

Don't forget to check out the Writers Help Page.

I've put together several writers links, websites, resources and places to submit you short stories, poems, essays, articles, or what ever else you are trying to get out there. Feel free you check it out and drop me a line if you know of some great writing sites or other online resources that are a writers must have.

Check out some of my short stories, and flash fiction here. Most of these are links to online publications, or exercises. I gotta make money somehow, so most of my stuff is purchasable, or coming to a bookstore.
